Stuttering Therapy in Fairfield County, CT
Stuttering isn't caused by nervousness and it isn't a habit a child will simply "grow out of" on a schedule. It's a neurological difference in how speech is produced, and it responds well to the right therapy at the right time. We treat preschoolers who have just started stuttering, school-age children and teens, and adults who have stuttered all their lives. In person in Westport or by telehealth anywhere in Connecticut. In-network with Anthem, Cigna and Aetna.
Who we see for stuttering
Preschoolers and young children
Children between two and six who have started repeating sounds or words, stretching sounds, or getting stuck. Some children recover on their own; others don't, and the factors that predict which are well understood. An early evaluation tells you whether to wait and watch or to start therapy, and gives you strategies for home either way.
School-age children, teens and adults
Children who have stuttered for more than a year, teens who are starting to avoid speaking situations, and adults who want to stutter with less struggle or handle presentations, interviews and phone calls with more confidence. Therapy at these ages addresses both the physical speech pattern and the avoidance and tension that build around it.
What stuttering therapy involves
A full evaluation of speech fluency, including how stuttering varies across situations and what it's costing the speaker
For young children, parent-focused approaches that change the communication environment at home
Speech modification techniques to reduce tension and produce speech more easily
Stuttering modification: learning to stutter more easily and move through blocks rather than fight them
Desensitization and reducing avoidance, so speaking situations stop shrinking
Support for school teams, including input on IEPs and classroom strategies
Telehealth sessions, which work particularly well for school-age children and adults
What to expect
We start with a conversation about what you've noticed, when it started, and how it's affecting daily life. The evaluation looks at speech in several contexts, since stuttering often looks different at home, at school and on the phone. For preschoolers we talk frankly about likelihood of natural recovery and what to watch for. For older children and adults, we set goals together; for most people the goal is easier, more confident communication rather than the elimination of every disfluency. Sessions are typically weekly, with practice between visits, and we check progress against the goals you set.
Insurance, referrals and fees
We are in-network with Anthem, Cigna and Aetna. For other plans, we provide a coded receipt (superbill) for out-of-network reimbursement. Stuttering evaluations and treatment are generally covered as speech-language pathology services; ask us when you call and we'll tell you what your plan needs.
Questions families and adults ask about stuttering
-
Get an evaluation now. Many young children do recover naturally, but a specialist can tell you whether your child has risk factors that make therapy worthwhile, and you'll leave with strategies to use at home either way.
-
No. Stuttering has a neurological and genetic basis. How families respond can make stuttering easier or harder to live with, and that's what we work on together, but parents don't cause it.
-
For young children, therapy can often lead to fluent speech. For older children and adults, the realistic and worthwhile goal is speaking with less struggle, less avoidance, and more confidence. Many adults who stutter communicate extremely effectively.
-
Yes, and for many school-age children and adults it's ideal, because the situations they want to practice (phone, video calls) are already part of the session.
-
Some do, if stuttering affects education. School SLPs often have large caseloads and limited stuttering-specific training, so many families add private therapy. We're glad to coordinate with your child's school team.
-
It varies widely with age and goals. After the evaluation we'll give you an honest estimate and revisit it as you progress.
